Washington The First In Nation (and the world?) To Legalize Pot For Recreational Use
Washington is the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. The new law ultimately will permit cannabis to be legally sold and taxed at state-licensed stores in a system to be modeled after those in many states for alcohol sales.
Here’s what The Stranger had to say:
"Passing I-502 would put Washington State at the forefront of the national movement to finally end pot prohibition. (The 10,000 annual pot arrests in Washington State are just a sliver of the 853,838 arrests in the United States, where there's one pot bust every 37 seconds.) Every 53 minutes, someone in Washington State gets arrested for pot." Thanks to Seattle's only news paper (The Stranger) for all the great support for I-502!
Here's what they're saying on the SPD Blotter:
If you’re over 21, then starting December 6th you can use marijuana, and possess marijuana—up to an ounce of marijuana buds, 16 ounces of solid marijuana-infused product, like cookies, or 72 ounces of infused liquid, like oil. While I-502 has decriminalized marijuana possession in Washington, the new state law does not change federal law, which classifies marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic. All Seattle Police officers have taken an oath to uphold not only state law, but federal law as well. However, SPD officers will follow state law, and shall Not Take Any Enforcement Action—Other Than to Issue a Verbal Warning—For a Violation of I-502.” ...Nice work SPD.
BTW, the writer for a lot of the blog posts over there at SPD is pretty awesome. I believe he's a former writer for The Stranger and it looks like he got a bit of "reprimand" for being "too light hearted and fun" and are now being edited and written much more straight forward and serious. Nice work none the less...and at least this internet gem is still posted on SPD: :)
Then this happened:
This was a bit of a surprise:
And apparently Washington State Govt Looking For "Marijuana Experts" To Help With Legalization Process...hmm, we might have to give them a ring:
Here are the straight facts about arrests in Washington State...and the horrible waste of people's money and time (and lives) that prohibition left in it's wake.
Don't forget to pick yourself up a limited edition Chief Cottonmouth t-shirt commemorating this historic day, December 6th, 2012!
Enjoy our new freedoms and play safe.XX
